Dealing with the New Wave of Consumer Activism

Thursday - June 3, 2010

The Council is pleased to invite you to attend a special workshop on the topic of “Dealing with the New Wave of Consumer Activism.”

The workshop will feature presentations from three nationally-recognized experts:

David Martosko, director of research, Center for Consumer Freedom.  Martosko may be best known as the person behind the scenes in organizing the www.humanewatch.org website which monitors the activities of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  More broadly, the Center for Consumer Freedom promotes personal responsibility and protecting consumer choices.

Kevin Murphy, founder, Food-Chain Communications, LLC.  Murphy’s expertise is helping the food retail sector understand the goals of various interest groups who seek to influence consumer food choices, such as those promoting locally-grown and organic food alternatives.  Murphy’s company is a marketing organization devoted to helping food-chain stakeholders communicate more effectively within the modern food system.

Jennifer Sirangelo, communication specialist, National 4-H Council.  Sirangelo will share the Council’s recent experience with the HSUS and her insight in dealing with such public relations challenges.

The purpose for this workshop is to provide Council members and their guests with greater insight on the nature and motivation of high-profile groups who are bringing diverse, new pressures to bear on the contemporary food system.
